Our first sailing days: learning & marvelling

By

🇦🇺⛵️ Ahoy Ahoy mates! We are writing to you live from Tidal Volume, the 11m sailboat on which we have been sailing for 2 days with Captain Steve. There is very little wind at the moment, so we are progressing slowly towards the North. This gives us time to familiarise ourselves with the maritime jargon and get our bearings. The days are peaceful and the sunsets and sunrises are splendid. After a few intense months, this change of pace and the simplicity of daily life on board is a welcome change!

The Queensland coast is a landscape of contrasts. It is very wild in places, and the hills and mountains are blanketed by a tropical canopy in shades of green, until they drop in the ocean. It’s easy to imagine oneself immersed in this dense jungle and feeling very small in the shade of its immense trees. This vertical terrain contrasts with the horizontal calm of the sea. Elsewhere, there are long and smooth curves of shore lined with fine sand and mangroves, often dotted with tourist villages. Elsewhere still, we pass long piers which extend far into the sea to feed the coal cargo ships for export while more metal giants await their turn offshore. We would almost have been tempted by a small act of ecological terrorism.

But we instead decided to pull the spinnaker out and put bright colours on the horizon. ⛵️
